Iconic
There are certain things that are iconic to your profession. Glasses for a librarian, lab coat for a doctor, or even a briefcase for a lawyer.Some of these things were very relevant to the profession in that past and may or may not be now. Are lab coats still really necessary for a doctor? Do all librarians have bad eyes? Obviously not but it's become expected to the point where it's hard not to notice its' absence.
For me, I don't look like a typical nerd but that is what my job is. To some degree I think that does affect the perception I have with some people. Good or bad.
