New Blanket

My wife and I have a dual zone electric blanket on our bed. Actually it's more of a mattress cover but you get the idea. It's very handy when you are hot natured and married to the queen of the arctic like I am. :) (just teasing honey)

Our heater is starting to give out however. Recently we switched it so that my side (which had almost never been used) could be on her side because her side was worn out. This has been ok for a while but it isn't heating like it used to. I think it may be time to shop for a new one.

Omega

If there are Omega 3 and 6 does that mean that they are the be-all end-all of fatty acids and that we must start with Alpha 3 and 6? ;)

I don't put a lot of stock in things that claim to burn fat magically. There are some natural fat burners out there though. Or at least, there are some things that will contribute to your overall plan in a beneficial way, that by themselves wouldn't make a big difference.

One of those things are omega 3's. If you don't eat a lot of fish you should consider supplementing for this. Your body can't make it by itself and it's essential that you get enough. I've also heard that it will help with fat loss but I don't really understand the science behind that I'm afraid.

Bummer

There are plenty of people out there that are unhappy and don't need to be. We are just starting to understand how the brain works and there are some great medicine being made.

I'm not a big medicine advocate but I also don't believe in suffering when you don't have to. If you are suffering then get treatment for depression. There are things that CAN help you, and there is no reason not to check it out.

Several friends and some family of mine have gotten treated (probably due to dealing with me ;) ) and it has helped them. Don't put it off.

Get A Grip

There will probably come a time in my life, given my genetic heritage, that I will have to have arthritis pain treatment. As of now though, I don't suffer from it at all.

One day I went to the golf store to get my clubs regripped. The guy asked if I wanted the same grips that I currently had. Sure, I said, they had been working fine for me. So he looked them up and told me the price for the "arthritic grips". Being in my twenties at the time, I was not very happy about using grips with that name regardless of how well they had worked. Apparently when you inherit clubs from your Grandfather, there are some things to consider.

Big Engines

I read something recently that changed my way of thinking just a bit. Most of us have heard at one time or another that the best natural fat burner is muscle. Therefore, if we pack on more muscle we will lose fat in the process.

To a degree that is true, but you only have to switch over to ESPN2 on a weekday afternoon and watch the strongman competition to realize that muscle isn't a golden ticket to low body fat.

Yes muscle will increase your metabolism which will help in your overall fight to lose fat, but lifting super heavy all the time in order to gain muscle is counterproductive because in order to actually gain a lot of muscle you will need to eat like a horse and not all of those calories will make it into muscle tissue. So yes, train for strength and muscle gain, but don't let that be your only fat loss strategy.

Lewis University Online

I took a look today at the online MS in Information Security offered by Lewis University. Being a programmer, I always find it interesting what schools think are appropriate prep classes for the real world. As it is, I have next to no security training so I won't speak to the quality of those offerings. There appear, on the surface, to be plenty of classes that deal with a lot of different aspects of security, which is good. I'm not the right person to tell you if they cover all the bases or if their focus is correct but it does pass the sniff test of an untrained outsider.

It is great that you can get this sort of training online now. My sister got her masters this way, and it saves a lot of time for the working professional. Most people don't have time to devote themselves fully to academic study after undergrad so having the option to take classes and work towards a degree online is a huge benefit.

Stories

Clearly people don't like to read boring things. (Yes I know that that is why you just stopped reading, ha ha ha, yes I thought of the irony) I guess that is why long lived stories are rarely about boring topics. Haven't read the Greek myth called "Apollo and the titan auto insurance review"? Me neither.

I guess that is why almost every song/story etc is about either love or adventure. Those are the things that people like to hear about. It's what gets our blood pumping and our imaginations soaring.

So the next time you sit down to write, pick an topic that people care about. PLEASE!

Investing

I don't really do much investing other than my standard retirement account. As far as I can tell, that will be enough, and it seems, all I can handle right now. I know a lot of people like to invest in many different things and obviously some do very well at it.

There are higher risks like IPO's and lower risks such as gold bullion. Scott Adams recently had a good quip about that. His contention is that if the economy collapses, people won't be trading gold for food. More likely, in his opinion, the most precious metal will be steal that is conveniently shaped like guns. LOL

I hope someday to have enough disposable income that I could actually be concerned about the next big bubble and how to invest to best take advantage of it, but for right now, I will have to be content to just save as best as I can.

Tourny Time

It's that time of year again. Time for the last second buzzer beaters to start falling like rain on the amazon. Hopefully you are someplace that you can watch some games and not out shopping for gifts with your future wife or some such.

No, March is for basketball. Even if you don't really like basketball. The tourny is great theater. So much fun to watch especially in the first two rounds. I look forward to it every year and I don't really watch a lot of college bball.

Wouldn't it be funny

Wouldn't it be funny if things in real life worked like they did in cartoons? Gravity has no effect until you notice that you are standing on nothing. Even then the fall doesn't really do any lasting damage. Dynamite only turns you charred and black for a few minutes. Even hair supplements have instant and hilarious effects.

Not to mention cool things like holes that can be moved around at will and singing frogs. Pretty much what ever your imagination was capable of would be possible. We could call it Saturday Morning Land.

Times Change

I remember when I bought my first flash drive. It was 512 mb and seemed huge. Now you can get 8 gigs easily and probably more.

For that matter, I remember when CD's were a cool new technology. I was a kid but I still remember. Now even those are considered antiquated compared to mp3's and dvd's, not to mention blue ray.

So what will be the next marvel? I have no idea but I'm sure it will be cool and will make all the stuff we have now seem like cave paintings.
