Throw Back Clothes
Sarah stared at the door. "Where to go this time" she wondered silently to herself. Her imagination began to wander as she contemplated the next great place in history that she would most love to witness first hand.
"The Hanging Garden of Babylon, or the Colossus of Rhodes?" She said to herself, this time aloud. "How many people would give everything they owned to see either of those two lost 7 wonders?"
She looked at the closet door, as if waiting for confirmation, but the door seemed relatively uninterested in her decision. She sighed and started pacing. She rubbed the top of her head with her left hand as she considered it. "The Gardens" she said at last with some finality in her voice as she skidded to a stop on the slick wooden floor. That served to remind her that she would probably need some shoes on if she wanted to go back in time today.
She quickly laced on her nikes and checked her back pack to be sure she hadn't forgotten anything, and then at last she approached her closet door. She took a deep breath, and waited a second for her heart to return to a normal gallop. This still made her nervous, despite the countless trips she had taken in this magic room. "Walk in closet, indeed" she said and chuckled to herself.
She grabbed the handle and pulled. A few seconds later, without opening her eyes, she took a step forward, and then pulled the door shut behind her. It closed with a soft click.
A few moments later a knock sounded at the door to her bedroom. Upon not hearing an answer Sarah's mom popped her head in. "Must be off exploring history again" she thought to herself as she entered and started picking up the laundry and adding it to the bulge already under her arm. She loved that Sarah had such a great imagination but often wondered if it was good for her to spend so much time confined in that closet instead of outside playing. "At least she's learning" she thought again as she turned to leave, being careful to walk silently so as not to spoil the fantasy for her daughter in the closet.
As she left she saw something on the floor that caught her eye. It wasn't so much that the item was odd, only that it seemed very out of place. It was fern leaf about 8 inches long, laying on the floor about a foot from the closet door. She picked it up and wondered at where Sarah had found it, as they didn't have any house plants. "Oh well, you never know with kids" she thought as she silently closed the door.
On her way out the door and down the steps she passed a window, and it went without her notice that the snow was falling, as it is very want to do in January.

Creeping
As I walked down the lamp lit street, I couldn't help but feel cold. It looked like rain any moment. Yes I can tell even when it's dark. I don't know how, I just know. The ground crunched under my feet despite my every effort to creep stealthily along the silent buildings. The echoes rang in my ears like static from a radio, and although the sound might be minimal, I held no hope of surprising my quarry.
I stopped by a mailbox to check my watch. The box looked like it had been beaten by a bat and I could imagine that only the most hopefull of correspondents would ever drop a letter in and expect it to ever leave the bottom. Mailmen didn't want to be here anymore than I did.
11:23 pm...
Still too early. I couldn't be late if I tried. I had tried, many times, but by some force of will beyond my control I was always too early. Forced to wait while minutes that seemed as individual eternities ambled by.
As I admonished myself a dart of shadow stabbed at the corner of my eye. I jerked my eyes to the spot, only to see nothing but the shady street replace it before my focus could reel it in. Either I was nuts or he was early too. Probably both...
Given the choice of 6 more eternal minutes and the curiosity of that moment, I gave in and followed the ghost of a shadow to the alley entrance from whence it had dove. My shoes laughingly gave me away as I approached and again pretended that I would learn to walk more silently someday.
As I slowly peered into the murky depths of the alley, one thing stole my vision. A broken window, lit from behind. Clearly he was here. I pulled my gun and crept loudly toward the light, as it's visage drowned out all else that may have been there.
I stopped just beside and took a long deep breath. I was being stupid and I knew it. I should wait for the others, but it was too late. I had made my choice and couldn't get away now if I wanted to.
I turned to quickly to the window, but never saw it. From behind came another crunching shoe and the remaining glass was shattered. My ears rang for a second and then all was silent. He had gotten here first was the only thought that permeated my consciousness for that brief second, but he hadn't gotten the last laugh...
Crazy Ramblings
For those of you who read my other blog and may have stumbled across this, welcome!
I intend for this to be a rambling stream of consciousness that may be fact or fiction, or whatever I feel like doing. So you'll never know what to expect.
Just don't expect to find out much about my fitness or what funny thing my kids did this week. For that, refer to my
other blog.
